Another week, another Newark delay
Jelly flat dupes, the business of wellness, and a Turks & Chaos recap.
Becoming a mom = letting go of control
The end of last week was a bit of a whirlwind. I got back from LA on Tuesday after wrapping the Milken event (if you’re not familiar, it’s a three-day gathering of people in finance, politics, and other fields). It all ended on a high note with a breakfast full of badass, interesting women: some in investment baking, some in real estate family offices. The founder of Little Saints, Megan Klein, was also there (her company does non-alcoholic cocktails which is having a huge moment).
My flight back to Newark was delayed by four hours but at this point we’ve all seen the recent headlines about that airport. Lots of comms delays so I wasn’t necessarily surprised. A lot of people have been asking why I fly into Newark instead of LaGuardia or JFK and the answer is that it is so much faster for me to get downtown from Newark, especially when you factor in Queens traffic. Anyway I landed around midnight and crawled into bed with a massive knot of guilt in my stomach: I try to arrange flights so that I could be there for bedtime with Preston and Claude and I had to miss that quality time with them because of the delay. One of the most shocking things about motherhood is the “mom guilt” that arises in the most random of times, particularly over moments that you have no control over. That powerlessness can be so shitty but I’m trying to remind myself that I do the best I can to be as physically and emotionally present as possible for my kids. It’s still a struggle though.
What does it mean to be “well”?
The next morning I was up at 7am with my kids and in hair and makeup by 8:30, coffee in hand, for the The Well Festival hosted by The New York Times. I attended the panel with a brand called Too Good, creating some content and catching some of the panels between shoots. The summit itself was actually great and really informative; it’s a full day of panels that explores what it means to actually be “well” from all angles. One standout was a conversation with Dwayne Wade (you can actually catch a lot of the interviews online and I strongly rec watching a few, lots of great food for thought). I ran into some familiar faces, overheard some smart conversations, and then rushed home to repack my suitcase.
Turks & chaos
The next day I flew to Turks & Caicos for a weekend trip with friends. It finally made it out of the group chat which is shocking honestly since we nearly canceled a few times. But I’m so glad we went through with it. It was the perfect mix of new friendships, belly laughs, ocean swims. I always feel most grounded when I’m near water and after ten straight days of go-go-go, I needed that reset more than I realized. (I’m a Scorpio and water sign so this makes sense lol.)
Ending this newsletter with a little semi-announcement: Going forward, Friday sends will be more centered on the business of wellness. I’ll also be sharing all the details around my new firm, Conteur Capital, this Friday. Stay tuned and drop any questions you have for that newsletter in the comments below.
Hannah’s List Recs
In the travel case lineup: resbiotic. It was a wildly busy week (as mentioned we almost cancelled our Turks & Caicos trip because of it) and my energy was at a zero by the time we boarded our flight out of Newark. The energy prebiotic is amazing and comes in individual powder packets that are super easy to pack.
Vacation really knocked it out of the park with their branding and their products are just as good. I’m obsessed with their Super Spritz SPF; easy to reapply sunscreen that doesn't mess up my makeup or make me breakout.
Myra Swim & Leslie Amon make the best resortwear and swim. Everyone was asking about the skirt I wore in my Turks and Caicos stories and sadly that seems to be OOS but this is the maxi dress version!
Gap’s new horseshoe pants are everywhere on Instagram right now. I haven’t tried them yet but I’m fully sold on the silhouette and loving the red colorway. Kind of reminds me of like 2012 Tumblr in a good way. I’m telling you: the Gap renaissance is here. I’m hyped. The quality is so good for the price and I love their kids' stuff. Lots of 100% cotton pieces.
Alaïa / the Row jelly flat dupes from Amazon. Honestly no notes. Easy to pack, shockingly comfortable, look way more expensive than they are.
