Biz bites: Nostalgia, newsstands, and a pre-Instagram brand shift

It kind of feels like we’re crawling back to a pre-Instagram internet, and when I say that, I don’t mean pre-app; I mean Paris filter, excess hashtags Instagram. We’re talking Tumblr reblogs and the Refinery29 slideshows that every early content creator (myself included) would hope to spot themselves in. Lots of fun media news happening this week:
The biggest fashion media headline is that Anna Wintour is leaving Vogue. Sort of. She’s stepping down from the top of the masthead but will continue on as Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast. Mixed feelings. She’s obviously shaped modern fashion coverage but I do think it opens the door for something new (or old but new again). Mostly I’m excited to see who they pick to fill in her shoes. Edward Enninful would have been incredible but speaking of Edward..
I’m assuming he’s not available as his company just announced 72 Magazine which will be both digital and quarterly print.
Refinery29 is having a relaunch! It will be lead by my dear friend and founder of Naked Beauty Brooke DeVard. Refinery honestly felt like the most formative media brand of the 2010s and it sort of lost its way under Vice but excited to see where it heads! And congrats Brooke!!!
Brands are really capitalizing on this sense of nostalgia and that’s why we’re seeing such a resurgence in print media and classic publications. Newsstand-inspired brand activations are everywhere and very much a signal that old media aesthetics are back. Honestly I think in an era where so much content is so readily available, it feels very luxe to buy a mag or spend meaningful time with one publication. (It’s why so many people are willing to pay for their favorite blogs on Substack; instead of paying for a magazine subscription we’re opting for digital access now).
